Is Vehicle Leasing Right For You?

Vehicle leasing is not for everyone.

Leasing that new car, van, or light truck can be a tempting proposition. There usually is little or no down payment, monthly payments are less, and you can get more vehicle for the money.

In Ohio, one of the reasons payments are less is that a "use tax" is paid as a part of the "monthly payment" as opposed to a "sales tax" paid on the total purchase price. Tax laws in some other states are the same. Ask your leasing company as it could have a bearing on whether you decide to lease or buy?

But, should you lease or buy?

Leasing that next car, van, or truck is for you if:
  • You like driving a new vehicle every two or three years
  • You want a more expensive vehicle with lower monthly payments
  • You like the idea or little or no down payment
  • You like having a vehicle that is always in warranty in case there is a problem
  • You dislike the process of trading, or selling, your old vehicle
  • You hate the hassle of buying
  • You do not want to tie up money in a depreciating asset, like a vehicle
Leasing that next car, van, or truck is NOT for you if:
  • You do not maintain vehicles
  • You subject your vehicle to rough treatment
  • You usually dispose of your vehicle before it is fully paid off
  • You like "fad" vehicles that lose their value quickly
  • You just like the idea of owning your vehicle
