What Should You Look For In A Vehicle Lease Agreement

You should always read and understand the details of the lease agreement/contract before you sign it. Ask for a copy so you can study it at your leisure. If there are terms you do not understand, ask questions or check out the section "What Does Vehicle Lease Terminology Mean?" Be aware that once you sign a lease, you most likely have no legal right to cancel. Under Ohio law, the three-day recession rule does not apply to the sale or lease of a vehicle.

Be sure, if you are an individual:
  • You do not relay on verbal promises. Make sure everything is in writing and you get and keep a copy.
  • You understand what type of lease agreement you are being asked to sign. Generally, the only kind of lease agreement/contract an individual should sign is a closed-end lease, sometimes referred to in the industry as a "wall-away lease."
  • You should clearly understand costs to you above and beyond the monthly payment, such as security deposit, insurance, taxes, license, maintenance, early termination fees, excess wear and tear charges, and excess mileage charge.
  • You should know if you could buy the vehicle at the end of the lease instead of turning it in to the lessor. Is the purchase price stated? It usually is the same as the residual value stated in the lease.
